Happy Saint Patrick’s Day!  Ireland gave us some of the greatest writers in the English language: poet William Butler Yeats, novelists James Joyce and Iris Murdoch, and playwrights Oscar Wilde, George Bernard Shaw, Samuel Beckett, Sean O’Casey and J.M. Synge.  Contemporary Irish-born writers include novelists John Banville, Maeve Binchy, Anne Enright, Edna O’Brien, Joseph O’Connor, William Trevor and poet Seamus Heaney.  We have works by most of these authors in the Library, as well as the films “The Banshees of Inisherin” (2022) with Colin Farrell, and director John Sayles’ “The Secret of Roan Inish” on DVD.  Come check them out!

  1. Thanks for this great list! (And the celebratory photo ☘️💚)
I would add Maggie O’Farrell to the contemporary list. Love her writing.

    1. I forgot O’Farrell! We have “Hamnet” in the collection. I also forgot “Small Things Like These” by Claire Keegan which was shortlisted for the Booker Prize. Many thanks for your feedback – Cathy FitzGerald

  3. Hi Cathy,
I loved the Library’s St Patrick’s Day picture. How much do you think you would need to purchase books from Library’s missing authors? I would be happy to donate. (Would $50 to $75. be enough?)
    Best wishes,
